So, in about 20 minutes the competition will finally tee off - Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell stare down Brandt Snedeker and Jim Furyk. Bold opening pairing from Davis Love III there, to say the least.

sitting here at work counting the clock down so i can get home and watch the coverage but im glad espn is here to keep me and all other golf fans updated
by mike gent9/28/2012 12:04:18 PM
McDowell, who won the trophy two years ago (with an assist from Hunter Mahan), will take the opening tee shot of the event. Watch those nerves, G-Mac!
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:05:09 PM
Ian Poulter is, quote, "very, very, very, very excited. It doesn't get any better."
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:08:06 PM
Four verys?! Now that's excited...
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:09:05 PM
Barely 30 minutes in and the man asks me to change my avatar back to an 'ESPN' one. Good start...

Here we go. The #rydercup is upon as and we're covering it live here: es.pn
i think team europe could take the morning session 3-1!!what a start that would be to procedings
by mike gent9/28/2012 12:12:59 PM
Predictions, now that's an idea. What are people thinking? I can see a 2-2 finish to the morning session - I fancy the Northern Irish duo to edge the first match, but can see Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner springing a bit of a surprise and Woods and Steve Stricker getting away with a tight win.
I'm really excited for Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia against Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley - really think that has the potential to be a cracking bout.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:16:48 PM
FASHION NEWS: Europe, for this session at least, are dressed as canaries. And not particularly healthy ones.
McDowell and McIlroy in black trousers, sickly yellow tops. How will the US respond?!
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:18:25 PM
The US are dressed in checked slacks and navy blue zip-up jumpers. Red caps top things off ... questionably. A scrappy half in the fashion match I think. Anyway, McDowell is about to tee off...
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:21:03 PM
"It's tee time" - as every chump in the office wants me to say. Ugh.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:21:18 PM
McDowell, with driver ... drags it left deep into the rough. Underwhelming. How will Jim 'Fairway' Furyk possibly match that?
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:22:08 PM
'Fairway' Furyk loses his nickname about as quickly as I gave it to him - he drags it just short of McDowell's poor opener! Two nervy opening drives there...

wonder how keegan bradley will handle his nerves in his first ryder cup!!especially if his playing partner is wayward of the tees
by mike gent9/28/2012 12:26:06 PM
Bradley and Mickelson are up next, Mike - and you're right, if Phil is wayward off the tee Bradley might have a difficult morning. But the pair have a very good mentor-mentee relationship, which just might produce something special.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:28:08 PM
Anyway, McIlroy is trying to work out how he is going to get back to the green from beyond state lines, or wherever McDowell left him.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:28:34 PM
McIlroy clips a wedge up and over the trees, and the ball just barely clears the front bunker. Still, just a little running chip shot for McDowell now. The US are a bit closer and a bit straighter, but not much. Snedeker will hit his first ever Ryder Cup shot.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:30:08 PM
Snedeker flies his approach about 25 feet over the pin, so Furyk will have a long range birdie putt to try and sneak an early advantage.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:31:31 PM
Davis Love is speaking: "You know you're nervous when G-Mac hits a tree off the first tee and Furyk misses a fairway!
"We trying to just go out and do the things we normally do. We're ready. We need to make birdies to get the crowd behind us."
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:32:52 PM
Lovely little chip from McDowell rolls about nine inches past the hole. Par secured for Europe.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:34:03 PM
Furyk rolls his putt about the same distance past, so that's that hole halved.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:34:37 PM
If westwood/molinari have their putting game today they could make quick work of z johnson/dufner thats a big if though!!
by mike gent9/28/2012 12:35:05 PM
One of the biggest 'ifs' I can think of, Mike! But we'll see...
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:35:50 PM
Donald is on the tee to start the second match ... and he finds the fairway! Success for Europe!
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:36:18 PM
Bradley wellies (technical term) a driver miles down the middle. So, no nerves for him then!
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:37:02 PM
At the second, McIlroy slaps a mid-iron slightly high and right of the pin. Another dinky little chip for G-Mac ahead.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:37:53 PM
Snedeker, in reply, finds the front edge of the green. Further away than the Europeans - but Furyk will at least have another putt at birdie.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:38:45 PM
For me, this IS the sporting event of 2012. Just love Ryder Cups. Love the team spirit and love the intensity.
by Jonny H9/28/2012 12:39:09 PM
Back at the first, Garcia slightly pulls his approach, into the first cut. 35-footer ahead for Donald.
Mickelson, from position A1, leaves it just short in the fringe, bang on line.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:43:12 PM
Donald rolls down a passable lag putt. Looks like another par, but Bradley might fancy his chances of birdie...
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:45:37 PM
Dragged an inch left from Bradley. So halved in fours again.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:46:38 PM
Westwood and Molinari, and then Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner, make their way to the first tee. The atmosphere is raucous, if not quite at Celtic Manor levels just yet.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:48:16 PM
On the second, McDowell wants a drop from a sprinklerhead by his ball - but he gets no love from the officials. Forced to play the shot, he gives his partner a testy six-footer to contend with. Not the best.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:50:21 PM
Westwood gets the third match underway - and he too finds the fairway. Dufner follows by finding the bunker. Might be one of only a handful of missed fairways in this contest.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:52:28 PM
On the second, McIlroy misses his side's par putt. So the Northern Irish duo are about to slip 1-dn.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:53:01 PM
And indeed they do, as Snedeker rolls in from marginally closer. A $11.4m putting stroke on show there...
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:53:29 PM
No sooner is the green cleared, than Garcia barely clears the water and sees his ball bundle into a greenside bunker. Awkward stance ahead for Donald, but he is one of the best sand players around.
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:54:26 PM
Mickelson, in response, gives Bradley about a 20-footer for birdie. Decent stuff from the Americans so far...
by Alex D9/28/2012 12:55:07 PM
Down 1, Johnson lays up short from the bunker. Molinari hits about the best approach we've seen so far, into about ten feet.
