It's an interesting point - in actual fact, they're probably accounting for the adrenaline rush which could see them hit the ball even further than they usually would.
Paul McGinley having a quiet but stern word with Rory McIlroy on the first tee. You get the feeling the Europeans realise they could seize total control of this contest this morning.
And now here come Poulter and McIlroy onto the first tee. Let's just say there's a bit of swagger about that particular pairing. McIlroy will have done well to sleep after his epic finish with Garcia against Fowler and Walker yesterday.
Kaymer and Bjorn were absolutely furious with themselves for not winning their morning match yesterday. They've started in brutally determined fashion today. Hold on to your hats there, America.
Oh my. Kaymer goes even closer. This is a European win at the first hole unless Jordan Spieth does something miraculous.
Terrific shot from Thomas Bjorn into the first green, and he'll almost certainly have a putt to win the hole given where Reed and Spieth are.
At the second hole, Justin Rose holes his birdie putt and levels the match. A good rebound putt from Rose as well, having missed a similar one at the first.
Patrick Reed tries to make up for his first tee nightmare, but his second shot is short of the green and not very accurate either. Not a good start for Reed.
Ah, sorry Kuch, I jinxed you there. He drags a birdie putt at the same hole left, when it was probably easier just to hole it.
Bubba Watson had a putt for birdie at the second and it horseshoed round the hole. Very unfortunate but already the American team is putting better today than they did at any point yesterday.
Largely because if they hit driver, they'll be in the same situation as Bubba Watson was - too close to the green to hit a full shot.
Henrik Stenson steams a putt at the second past the hole. That's certainly no gimme from there.
Hunter Mahan at the first green... and it drops in the side door! USA 1-up in the first two matches!
Great strike from Kaymer, who booms it past both Bjorn and Spieth straight down the middle.
Thomas Bjorn outdrives Spieth by about seven yards, on exactly the same line.
Jordan Spieth plays a much better, though very safe, tee shot to make up for his partner's effort.
Patrick Reed has just "Webb Simpsoned" his first tee shot! Right of the top of the club. Good grief.
Back on the tee, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed are going through their warm-up routine. Advance warning that at some point today I will combine the two into Jordan Reed - the Washington Redskins tight end is NOT playing, let's make that perfectly clear right now.
And not even make the green with it. Yikes.
The Americans hold the slight advantage on the first green in Match 2. Donaldson will putt from off the green...
Jim Furyk hits his approach at the first pin high.
He doesn't. It stays on the left lip and doesn't turn. Rose barely missed a stitch yesterday, so that is a big moment for the US. They lead after the first hole of the morning.
And Kooooch holes his birdie putt. Pressure on Rose to get the halve.
And Westwood (with his long game being worth seranading) promptly finds the rough. Typical.
Donaldson joins Mahan and Furyk by finding the middle of the fairway.
And therefore, playing pretty long as well.
A good indication of the course conditions are the buggy tyre tracks that have been left in the middle of the first fairway. It's wetter than it looks due to the morning dew.
He faces Hunter Mahan and Jim Furyk with his foursomes partner from yesterday, Jamie Donaldson. They formed quite a formidable partnership.
To the tune of Hey Jude, Lee Westwood is seranaded with:
"Hey Lee... your short game's good... but your long game... is even be-e-et-ter"
Bubba pitches up onto the green, but he's really relying on his partner to do the business and win the hole here.
He's furthest away after two shots. His pitch is underhit and spins back off the green. He was actually too close to the green, as it turned out.
Bubba Watson's drive went 332 yards, straight down the middle. The best first tee shot of the week, bar none. And yet...
And Justin Rose somehow goes even closer than Kuchar from his position in the deep rough! That's a phenomenal shot. What a start this is.
It's bettered by Kuchar from the middle of the fairway though. There's going to be some seriously attack-minded golf from the Americans today.
Superb shot by Henrik Stenson from the bunker - finds the green and has a birdie putt. Great effort.
Must be noted that European galleries are far more reticent to take up Bubba Watson's offer of roaring during his first tee shot of the morning than their US counterparts. Bubba almost looks offended that they're not louder.
Stenson's tee shot is met with silence - and that's why. It's in the bunker. Advantage emphatically to the USA.
Justin Rose pulls his tee shot into the deep rough. Pressure on Stenson to find the fairway now.
And Bubba hits an even better tee shot! Great strike. Great start for the US, and boy do they need it.
It's a good dunt and straight down the middle. Nice start for Kuchar.
