Superb performances all round from them. Very impressive.
So, to update the score: Europe 1-1 USA.
Long effort from Garcia trickles past the cup at 13. Poulter has a chance to keep his match alive...but leaves his putt short. Spieth and Reed take the match 5&4 for USA's first point.
Bradley clips it to five feet. Good response.
Expected in the next 15 mins or so.
Bradley appears to have taken a drop at 13 having found the back wall with his effort from the path. Difficult up and down. McIlroy plays a lovely chip towards the pin, about two feet away.
Because his previous shot was rubbish, is the short answer.
Mickelson well and truly in the rough here - with two trees in front of him. Pitches out and finds...the rough. But at least he's closer to the pin.
Graeme McDowell and Matt Kuchar both warming up on the range - afternoon pairings expected around 12.30pm.
Bjorn's tee shot at 16 straight down the fairway.
Keegan Bradley does hit off the path - that'll leave a couple of scratches on the wedge...
McIlroy pitches from the deep rough just short of the green - he was close to the path there, so a decent recovery.
Phil in trouble after a wayward tee/second shot at 13. Garcia makes the green but is about a country mile from the hole.
Jimmy Walker misses a chance to gain a shot on Bjorn and Kaymer. Hole halved at 15.
A halve at 13 and Spieth/Reed are dormie five.
Walker has 120-odd yards into the pin at 15 - he's right in the middle of the fairway too. Creeps within 12 feet.
Fowler hacks out - and puts his ball alongside Kaymer's. Grand effort.
Bjorn takes fly with his approach - and finds the greenside bunker from the fairway. Kaymer is in the rough and hacks his second just short of the front fringe.
Fowler is crouched in the rough at 15th - his ball is very much plugged in the long stuff.
Very true, Budman - but you give yourself a better chance with wonderful shots into the pin. Meanwhile, Garcia makes his par without any signs of doubt.
Phil holes for a par - Garcia must sink his otherwise it's advantage USA.
That wasn't his best effort by any stretch, curling it a couple of feet past the hole. Not even close.
World No.1 McIlroy decides to absolutely fire his effort past the hole at 12. About 15 feet past the cup. He can't hole out on return and Phil has a chance to restore that two hole lead...
Garcia all but secures a par at 12 with a lovely shot at 12. Gallagher, meanwhile, plays a blinder at 13, taking on the greenside hazards by the pin and spinning one within 15 feet. Lovely approach.
Poulter hasn't really clicked yet - he's put his second shot to the back of the 13th green.
Centre of the green for him - USA in pole position at 12.
Wonderful shot from Phil as he takes on the bunker far left of the green - and wins. Superb iron from 'Lefty' and he's well within a birdie chance there.
Keegan doesn't like his second shot at 12 either. Wind playing havoc at Gleneagles as that one drops right of the green.
Long iron from Garcia at 12 - oh how he hates that one. Back of the green. Ugly effort.
Garcia also on the fairway. Reed and Spieth can only bogey 12 - Gallagher's par has earned a shot back. USA five up with six to go in that match.
