Hello and welcome to ESPN's coverage of first practice from the Russian Grand Prix at a sombre Sochi, with F1 continuing under a cloud this weekend following the horrible injury suffered by Jules Bianchi in Suzuka last weekend.
The show must go on, as it always did and always has done - and as Grosjean poignantly said yesterday, it's likely a racer like Bianchi would want it to.
@Bhanu: It's a possibility, and research has gone into it. But it's not something F1 will just implement off the bat without thinking about it. There's lots of different variations to consider, if they were to bring anything in at all.
A really nice touch indeed. Poignant.
The clock is ticking and this session is underway. The first car down the pit lane is Fernando Alonso, a close friend of Bianchi.
Initial installation laps being completed first thing here on this sleek-looking circuit. Sergey Sirotkin makes his debut in this session, of course, replacing Esteban Gutierrez.
Worrying how many drivers said this circuit is "just like Valencia". Let's hope the races are a little bit better.
@Mohan: At the moment, no. And to be honest the whole thing is a complete mystery. There are about four viable options which all don't seem completely out of the blue - the next few days may be crucial.
@timot: It is sunny today and the forecast for rain remains at 0% - so it should be dry conditions from here on out.
@Bhanu: I think if Sauber could retain him, they would - especially with the race in Mexico next year. As for drives elsewhere, I don't know if there's anywhere he could move that would be a step up.
Anywhere with a free seat, after all.
Everyone is back in the garage after those initial installation laps, with only Hamilton and Rosberg yet to leave the garage.
@KnightofAMG: It's pretty quick, you stay on the throttle for a very, very long time around there.
Rosberg heads down the pit lane, completes a practice start and gets underway.
@Alex_raymo: After Belgium, the team decided to park contract negotiations until the end of the season. It makes sense, it means he can focus fully on his racing. I don't see why Mercedes would want to get rid of him, and why Hamilton would want to leave.
Hamilton is out on track as well now as Rosberg decides to do a second installation lap with a lot of sparks flicking out from behind his Mercedes.
Hamilton tells Mercedes he has a right vibration every time he touches the brakes.
@ThomasL: He has suffered a diffuse axonal injury and remains in a critical but stable condition. No further updates have been given since Tuesday.
Rosberg runs wide and across a run-off area but still completes the first ever timed lap around the Sochi Autodrom - a 1:49.932.
@LD: The big loop. (That may or may not be the official name). It doesn't appear to have any camber to it, and I haven't heard any driver say so.
Rosberg's error at Turn 13. A struggle to learn the corners without reference from previous years.
@LD: It would be a wonderful curve ball this late in the season.
@DonovanKimiFan: This doesn't appear to be the case here - anyone else experiencing the same issue please let me know.
