Seeing those esses makes me remember the wonderful pass of Bottas on Gutierrez last year... Brave, fair racing by two rookies... Who would have though Bottas will pick up a few podiums already in his short career!

Worth noting on Hamilton, he may not be using his race engine or gearbox so might not be an issue which carries over to tomorrow. But then I've been wrong before, once or twice.

@Mary-Paule: It would be in order of which one took the penalty - so if Hamilton took a penalty, and then Rosberg did afterwards, Hamilton would start ahead of Rosberg. They'd both be behind Vettel for the same reason.

It was the British GP at Brands Hatch. I was and am a fan of Jim Clark, greatest driver I ever saw. I see a lot of him in Hamilton.

As an older fan, What I would like to see as vehicle regs is 1. Not longer than X, 2, No wider that Y, No lighter than Z, Can use no more fuel than L. How many cylinders, if it turbo or not gound effects, active suspension all good for me

The clock has expired, that's the end of this session. We are due to have another trial of the 'virtual safety car' we saw at the end of the morning session. This is an initiative brought in after Bianchi's accident at Suzuka, to limit the drivers to a certain speed delta.

I am a new US fan to F1 due to going to the first US GP in Austin. I am 31 Bummed not there this year. I am hoping to get to a track Europe next year

So, once again Hamilton tops a free practice session (his 14th one of the season), only just 0.003s ahead of Rosberg. Alonso is the best of the rest, a massive 1.104s down on his old McLaren team-mate.

The virtual safety car has been deployed - meaning all cars are driving to a certain delta. This idea is to neutralise the race and take the choice of speed out of drivers hands rather than judging it by themselves under double-waved yellows.
